Mark Watts Director
Mark Watts is Director of WatefrontEurope, representing client interests directly to the
EU institutions and offering high-level strategic advice on EU policy, legislation and
funding. He runs the WaterfrontEurope office in Brussels and specialises in
securing improvements to emerging EU laws.
Mark, listed in 'Who's Who', has a 20 year record of achievement. His career spans
senior levels of local government, politics, public affairs, international relations and
academia. A London School of Economics trained economist, Mark is acknowledged
expert on EU regulation and law-making. Mark started working for a London Borough
in the field of planning, transport and economic development.
The Labour Party soon spotted his talent and he was elected as one of Britain's youngest
ever Councillors in 1986, becoming Labour Leader on his Council by 1990.
In 1994 he was elected an MEP, serving until 2004, first for the constituency of Kent East
and later for the South East Region, until 2004. A member of the Parliament's
Regional, Transport, Tourism, Agriculture, Environment and Budget Control Committees,
he served for eight years as Labour Transport Spokesman in the European Parliament and
was appointed by the Prime Minister to be the link MEP to the Cabinet Office in the UK,
focusing on Better Regulation. He was Rapporteur on a number of important
pieces of legislation.
Since turning his attention to public affairs, in just two years he has helped turn
WaterfrontEurope into one of Britain's leading specialist consultancies in Brussels,
representing and advising a range of prestigious organisations and companies. His
advice to clients has made a real difference, ranging from securing important changes to
emerging EU law to outright rejection of an entire EU Directive. Mark was shortlisted
in the European Consultant of the Year category in the Public Affairs News Awards 2007.
He is a Member of the Council of the University of Kent, where he sits on their Audit Committee, an
occasional columnist for Lloyd's List and other publications, and is regularly asked to speak at
international conferences and seminars. He is an officially accredited lobbyist at the European Parliament.
Mark splits his time between Brussels and a family home in Ashford, Kent where in his spare time he enjoys cycling in the Weald of Kent.
