The Government has ambitious plans
to build 3 million new homes by 2020; these new developments
will all require supporting infrastructure for water, waste,
transport, as well as local supermarkets and other facilities.
However this is in the face of increasing public opposition.
68% of British people say the goal of building 3 million
new homes is unrealistic, and one in four households has
actively opposed a planning application in the past year
(Saint UK Index). Public consultation is either insufficiently
publicised for people to be aware of it or when it does
happen people feel their views are not considered.
This conference
seeks to bring together government officials, developers,
local authorities, and all those with an interest in planning
and development within the UK, to discuss public attitudes
to development, and how the public can be better engaged
with. The conference will focus on the results of the Saint
UK Index, how public consultation can be improved, increasing
understanding of necessary development, and making the most
of planning gains and the new Community Infrastructure Levy
to ensure developments benefit existing residents.
Key issues to be discussed:
Why are public attitudes
becoming increasingly adverse to developments and how can
this be changed?
The impact of development
of the transfer of planning powers to the Mayor of London
How can public consultation
be improved?
Increasing public understanding
of necessary development
Negotiating planning
gains with developers
How are planning gains
currently being used?
