Ports are crucial to the growth of the UK's economy as well
as to the global economy. As growth in shipping continues,
the need for capacity will increase. The Department for
Transport expect an average annual growth rate of around
3-4% in the deep sea container sector. The Ports Policy
Review is intended to clarify the Government's role in ports
and address the key challenges facing the sector, including
the issue of inland infrastructure.
This one-day conference supported by the Department for
Transport looks at the key issues addressed in the review
such as the provision of new capacity, planning changes,
financial forecasts and issues around ports funding, reducing
emissions at ports and inland connections to ports.
Key issues to be discussed:
What are the constraints
on capacity and can it be left to the market to decide?
How can sustainable
growth be ensured and adverse environmental impacts avoided?
Reducing emissions at
ports: the implications of introducing cold ironing
Tackling congestion
and funding inland connections to ports
The role and powers
of the MMO in assessing planning applications
Clarifying decision
making under the Habitats Directive
The impact of structural
changes in port ownership
The impact of European
ports policy on the UK
The revised guidance
for Trust Ports
