A recent report stated Great Britain
as the third worst out of 10 European countries for pedestrian
fatalities. Once population is taken into account, Great
Britain kills around twice as many pedestrians as Sweden
and the Netherlands (studied in the latest EuroTest report
into pedestrian crossings, released by the AA). In 2006,
3,294 children were killed or seriously injured on the roads
in Great Britain; an average of 9 children each day (National
Statistics Road Casualties of Great Britain 2006). The Government
has set itself a target of reducing child deaths and serious
injuries on the roads by 50% by 2010.
This conference aimed at road safety officers and highways engineers focuses on how pedestrian casualties can be reduced. The morning looks at the role of education whilst the afternoon examines street design, considering whether the removal of street furniture can make streets safer and the impact of other traffic calming measures such as 20mph limits and HomeZones.
Key issues to be discussed:
How can the UK's record
on pedestrian road safety be improved?
Why has the UK got a
poor record on pedestrian safety and what can be done to
improve this?
Communicating the dangers
to pedestrians of all ages
Training drivers in
order to reduce pedestrian casualties
Engaging children with
road safety
Does removing street
furniture make streets safer for pedestrians or more dangerous?
Should all residential
streets be 20mph zones, how can this be enforced and how
much difference could it make?
The impact of HomeZones
and how can the number be increased?
What more is needed
to make the UK's streets safer for pedestrians and children?
